ILHS Key Club members are going along for the ride with ILMS cross categorial students at equestrian therapy.
Last fall, students in the ILMS special needs class began the therapy sessions each week at the Discovery Riders Linda Liane Hauck Equestrian Center near Bellefontaine. Liberty National Bank and Quest Federal Credit Union, along with United Way of Logan County, are sponsoring scholarships for the students to participate free of charge to their families and school. However, more volunteers were needed to help the students get the most out of the therapy.
ILHS Key Club advisor Jen Ignarski says that's where her service students can help. Key Club officers from each grade level were the first to join the middle school class recently. Ignarski says the high school students helped the middle schoolers feed the horses and clean out stables. Then they got to help walk the horses around the arena while the younger students saddled up and rode.
Ignarski says this service project is perfect for the Key Club members because they get to connect with younger students and assist a local therapy organization. Different Key Club members will be able to sign up to assist with the therapy sessions over the next few months.
