Students involved in 21st Century Grant programs at Indian Lake High School are using their skills to repair needed equipment, save the district money and make a difference on campus.

14 students in Dave Snapp’s Manufacturing/Welding course and 10 involved in the after-school Welding Club worked to refurbish the Indian Lake Maintenance and Facilities Department’s utility trailer at the end of last school year.

Co-Maintenance Supervisor Matt Hurley said, “It was in pretty bad shape. The frame was bent and the wood was rotten. We couldn’t use it for much.”

Hurley and Co-Maintenance Supervisor Dustin Plikerd asked Dave Snapp if he thought his welding students could help. They were excited to put their skills to the test.

Snapp says students tore off the wooden deck, reinforced all of the inside steel structure with 4" channel iron reclaimed from D&J Scrap Metal in Bellefontaine. The students welded a new hitch on the front, created fenders from reclaimed steel decking from D&J's, and then the whole trailer was sanded down and painted black. Also, the ramps were shortened two feet and the lights were rewired.  A new wood deck was also installed. Miscellanous scrap metal was traded for the channel pieces, so Snapp estimates the total cost for the project was approximately $450 including the new wood, paint, and a hitch. Hurley says the repair saved the district more than a thousand dollars over the cost of a new trailer while providing students the opportunity to see benefits of the skills they have mastered.

The maintenance staff is now using the trailer to haul equipment from building to building on campus often.

The Welding Club is part of the ILHS 21st Century Grant known as Ohio Means Jobs @ILHS. This school year’s 21st Century offerings, including Welding Club, Art Club, Science Club, ACT Prep, tutoring, and after school fitness will begin in October.
